Checklist - 3 Weeks Before Moving Day

Print

With your moving day now just around the corner, it’s a good time to check your to-do list and see if there’s anything you have missed. Hopefully, you’re now focusing on the details and are coordinating with your movers. Here are some of the things that you should try to finish during the third week before your move:

  • Plan for your utilities to be disconnected and your new services to be turned on at your new home.
  • Consider whether you will be able to move any of your houseplants or if you will need to dispose of them prior to your move. Some states prohibit moving houseplants, so check with your moving company and decide whether to transport the plants or to give them to friends or neighbors.
  • If you have pets, this is a good time to get them all of their required shots and health certificates from your veterinarian. Some states require up–to-date health certificates and rabies inoculations.
  • Have a plan on how you will transport your pet(s) during the move and make appropriate arrangements. If you’re moving long distance, consider some of the respected animal moving companies such as Air Animal or Animal Land.
  • If time permits, get a medical, dental and eye checkup. It may take a while to find new family dentists and doctors whom you’re comfortable with in your new location.
  • After speaking with your moving company, schedule appointments with technicians who will be servicing your appliances or electronics before the movers arrive.
  • Confirm your actual moving day with the movers and let them know if there have been any changes to your inventory since they performed their in-house survey.
  • Confirm with the movers if you’re going to need additional services, such as moving a piano and a pool table, and special packing for arts or antiques. Also, decide how you want to handle the packing on move day: no packing, partial packing or full packing.
  • If you’re going to need some additional storage for your household items at your destination, review these options with your moving company.
  • If you’re transporting your car, finalize the reservation with a car shipping company. This is a good time to go through any final details to make sure you have everything in order for the shipping company to pick up your car.
  • If you plan on utilizing outside storage facilities after your move, research price quotes and availability.

While there is still a lot to do, just stay calm and be organized. You will be at your new home before you know it.
