Moving Abroad? Don’t Forget Your Passport and Visa

Print

The most important document you will need when you move to another country is your United States passport. When planning your international move, make sure that you and your family have current passports. It can take six to eight weeks to get a new passport, and during the busy summer travel season, your wait may be even longer.

When you’re traveling abroad, keep your passport with you but don’t pack it. Make at least two copies of your passport, driver’s license and other important documents. Store one copy of these documents in your suitcase while you travel and leave the other copy back home with friends or family. They can send you these documents in case you need them.

You will need the following information when you apply for a new passport:

  • Previous U.S. passport or proof of citizenship
  • Two identical passport-size photos
  • Photo identification such as a driver’s license
  • Completed passport application
  • Exact passport application fee (change may not be available)

You must apply in person for a passport if:

  • You’re obtaining your passport for the first time
  • It has been more than 15 years since your last passport was issued
  • You were less than 16 years old when your last passport was issued
  • Your passport is lost or stolen

If your passport is lost or stolen outside the U.S. then you should contact the local U.S. embassy. If your passport is lost of stolen inside the U.S. then contact:

Obtaining a visa

A visa is required in many countries for visiting and employment. The rules on work visas are very complicated and vary widely among foreign counties. Work closely with your employer’s human resources department if you’re moving for your job. They should be able to help you get your documentation in order. If you’re moving on your own, contact the local consulate of the country you’re moving to, and they should be able to provide visa information such as requirements and costs. Along with your passport application, completing the documentation for your new country should be one of the first items on your to-do list. Processing some of these documents can take a long time.
